The SIMD meeting will be held following the American College of Medical Genetics
meeting (ACMG - March 24-28, 2010) and will include a joint session the
afternoon of March 28th which will focus on metabolic causes of autism and
neurodevelopmental disability. This joint session will be held at the
Albuquerque Convention Center from 10:30am-3:00pm. After the joint session the SIMD
will host an opening reception at the Hotel Albuquerque from 7-10pm with the
annual meeting starting at 8:00am on March 29th. The meeting will conclude on
Wednesday, March 31st at noon.
The SIMD meeting this year will follow the ACMG meeting in Albuquerque, New
Mexico. An outstanding scientific program is planned with invited speaker
sessions featuring both SIMD members and special guests addressing topics in
basic research, clinical research and clinical diagnosis and management.
Highlights will include:
- a session on the role of metabolic alterations in autism and
neurodevelopmental disability (joint session with ACMG);
- Updates on congenital disorders of glycosylation: from basic science to
clinical presentation;
- a session on pediatric neurotransmitter disorders: how they present, when to
suspect them, how to reach a definitive or tentative diagnosis, what can be done
to treat them;
- a special session organized by Genetic Metabolic Dietitians International for
the SIMD, dealing with practical aspects of treatment of common metabolic
conditions such as MSUD, propionic acidemia, and phenylketonuria with new forms
of therapy for this latter condition;
- metabolic disorders causing impairment of hearing and sights, with a
discussion of the basic science behind them and the opportunity to develop new
therapies that are currently lacking;
- the Ask the Experts Session is becoming one of the popular events of our
meeting, with all participants contributing interesting cases and their brains
to provide solutions.
- Posters will be displayed for the entire meeting and close to the meeting
venue, allowing their view during breaks. There will be an attended poster
session on Tuesday, March 30th from 3:30-6:00pm with wine and cheese served.
As always, we will have a Contributed paper session featuring the abstracts of
our travel award winners, and the opportunity to hear and support the next
generation of SIMD contributors and members.
The SIMD meeting will
highlight talks on disorders of
glycosylation, pediatric neurotransmitter disorders, current treatment and
outcome of inborn errors of metabolism, hearing and vision loss in metabolic
disorders along with other topics. In
addition, the program will include presentations by trainees and young
investigators, and our Ask the Experts session where you can challenge the panel
with unusual and unknown cases to test their knowledge.
There will also be an attended poster session and
reception. As in the past, young trainees
can apply for travel awards. CME
credits will be available.
